Honorable Judge Alexander Williams Provides Commentary on Baltimore Sun: Educating Kids about School Violence Begins at Home

Hero Image

On May 13, 2024, Honorable Judge Alexander Williams Jr. provided guest commentary in the Baltimore Sun on school violence. In the article, Williams notes the actors that can contribute to our awareness and reversal of school violence and its impact on our communities including parents, teachers, and the students themselves.

  1. First, there are parental and community roles.  Parents, grandparents, guardians, coaches, the faith-based community and others who are in a position to reach and influence young people must be alerted, informed and educated about school violence.
  2. Second, preventing school violence requires that members of the broad education community pay attention to signs of trauma and distress, including teachers, counselors, security, social workers, mental health professionals and all staff,.
  3. Third, the students must be held accountable. In the last several years, a number of school districts, including Maryland’s, in an effort to consider the rights of students, have reformed their codes of conduct to enact more progressive policies of student conduct and behavior.

Where you see wrong or inequality or injustice, speak out, because this is your country. This is your democracy. Make it. Protect it. Pass it on.
