Staff Spotlight: Lauren Jones

Through initiatives like the Alabama Civil Rights Journey, our team works to connect history with the present, encouraging students to deepen their understanding of justice, civic engagement, and community leadership.

We are proud to highlight Lauren Jones, Research Associate at the University of Maryland and a recent graduate of the University of Chicago. With academic interests in sociology, social psychology, and human behavior, Lauren is passionate about creating educational experiences that encourage students to critically examine the systems, stories, and communities that shape our world.

Reflecting on the Alabama Civil Rights Journey, Lauren shared that the experience reinforced the importance of both opportunity and access in education.

"The journey reflected the mission, vision, and values of the Judge Alexander Williams, Jr. Center for Education, Justice & Ethics by giving students both opportunity and access. The opportunity to travel to these historic sites and hear firsthand accounts of history demonstrates the Center's commitment to developing the critical consciousness of future generations."

When asked what the journey reminded her of, Lauren reflected:

"The Alabama Civil Rights Journey reminded me that everyone has the opportunity to make a difference. We as a people have had an innate resilience our whole lives. Although it has served us well, it is truly the fortitude and strength of community that has—and will continue to—sustain us."

Lauren's reflection captures the heart of the Center's mission: creating opportunities for experiential learning that inspire students to become thoughtful leaders, engaged citizens, and advocates for justice in their own communities.
