Everyday, we are moving forward in Baltimore and beyond. Today, we salute the Thurgood Marshall Center (PS103) hosting engAGE with Heart today featuring Dr. Stephen Thomas, Dr. Josh Sharpstein, Senator Ben Cardin, and Reverend Alvin C. Hathaway (pictured left to right) in conversation around innovation in healthcare with Dr. Esa Davis and Reverend Dr. Terris King.

Launched in October 2023, engAGE with Heart is a community-led health initiative based in Baltimore, Maryland, developed in partnership by the Global Coalition on Aging, Novartis, local faith‑based organizations, senior centers, and city health agencies. Their mission is to reduce heart health disparities and improve cardiovascular outcomes across underserved Baltimore communities by merging health education, healthy food access, and preventive screenings into trusted local institutions like churches and senior centers.

 Their efforts include:

  • Education
Community curriculum based on national best practices and local input, focusing on heart disease prevention, risk factors, health literacy, and navigating access to care

  • Healthy Food Access
Initiatives include fresh food markets, cooking demos, and lessons on grocery shopping on a budget, nutrition label reading, and meal planning for heart wellness

  • Screenings & Care Access
Free on-site cardiovascular health screenings (blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes) conducted by providers such as Johns Hopkins nurses; plus connections to follow-up care and resources
