Judge AW Center Acknowledges Constitution and Citizenship Day and Constitution Week

Hero Image

On September 17, 2026, on Constitution Day and Citizenship Day, we commemorate the signing of the U.S. Constitution on September 17, 1787, and reflect on the enduring ideals expressed in its opening words. Observed annually from September 17–23, Constitution Week invites us to examine the history and importance of the U.S. Constitution and the essential role it plays in strengthening the rule of law.

The Constitution exists as an invitation for every generation to consider how justice, liberty, civic responsibility, and the general welfare take shape in the lives of all people. Its promises are not fulfilled automatically. They depend on informed citizens who are willing to learn, ask difficult questions, engage across differences, and lead with integrity.

Throughout our nation’s history, constitutional rights and protections have not been experienced equally. Structural inequities continue to deny civil rights and human dignity to historically disadvantaged and marginalized communities, threatening the very fabric of our democracy.

At the Judge Alexander Williams, Jr. Center for Education, Justice & Ethics at the University of Maryland, College Park, we develop comprehensive solutions to the ethical questions and systemic challenges created by these inequities. Through signature programs, strategic initiatives, applied research, and advocacy for ethical public policy reforms, we work to advance social justice and prepare critically engaged leaders to address the challenges facing our communities and future generations.

As we observe Constitution Week, take a moment to check your voter-registration status, update your information if needed, and learn about voting requirements in your state.

May we recommit ourselves to protecting civil rights, preserving human dignity, and helping our nation move closer to the promise of “a more perfect Union.”

Where you see wrong or inequality or injustice, speak out, because this is your country. This is your democracy. Make it. Protect it. Pass it on.
