The Judge Alexander Williams Jr. Center for Education, Justice and Ethics would like to congratulate the Department of African American Studies (AFAM/AASD) for recreating the department name to Department of African American and Africana Studies (AAAS).

Sangeetha Madhavan, Dean for the Department of African American and Africana Studies (AAAS), reflects that the name change better represents the AAAS faculty’s research in Africa and the African Diaspora, as well as the diversity of Black students at UMD.
